Prepare transparent cutouts and reusable overlays
Create a reusable transparent subject or overlay while preserving the source image and an editable GIMP project.
- Start with
- A compatible source image, with its original source, creator, and rights details available.
- GIMP contributes
- GIMP is used to isolate the subject, refine its mask, save the layered working file, and export a transparent PNG.
- Card and handoff
- The resulting Card can reference the PNG alongside the source, creator, license, attribution, and editable XCF where supported. This guide does not imply an automatic GIMP handoff.
The workflow
- Keep the source layer intact and isolate the subject with a selection or mask. Refine hair and soft edges at high zoom.
- Add a temporary contrasting layer below the subject to spot halos, missed pixels, and edge contamination.
- Save the editable composition as XCF, hide the temporary background, and export a PNG with alpha.
- Reopen the PNG over light and dark backgrounds to check transparency and edge quality.
Keep with the work
Retain the original source image, layered XCF, transparent PNG, and any selection or channel needed for later edits. Record the individual asset’s source and license details with its Card; the provider’s general license does not replace item-level terms.
