Retouch without losing the original
Make reversible photo or product-image corrections, then prepare a delivery copy without overwriting the source.
- Start with
- An original photograph or product image, with its source and rights details available.
- GIMP contributes
- GIMP is used for layered cleanup with masks and for exporting a flattened delivery copy.
- Card and handoff
- The resulting Card can associate the selected PNG or JPEG with the original, its rights context, and the editable XCF where supported. No automatic GIMP handoff is implied.
The workflow
- Open the image and save a working copy as XCF, leaving the original untouched.
- Duplicate the source layer and use layer masks for background changes, local corrections, and edge refinement.
- Keep retouching, text, and color adjustments on clearly named layers so you can compare revisions.
- Export a flattened PNG when transparency is needed or a JPEG for a compact photographic delivery, then reopen the export to inspect it.
Keep with the work
Retain the original image, layered XCF, and exported PNG or JPEG. Check crop, dimensions, embedded color profile, alpha handling, and hidden-layer content before the export moves to the next step. Keep the chosen source’s license and attribution details connected to its Card.
